UNESCO-listed Gjirokastra is built entirely of stone — slate roofs, cobbled lanes and tower houses climbing the hillside beneath one of the Balkans’ largest castles. This walk starts at the bazaar crossroads, climbs to the Castle with its museum and famous American jet, descends into the Cold War tunnel, and finishes among the finest tower houses, including Ismail Kadare’s. The lanes are steep — bring water and take your time.
