Berat, the city of windows one above another

Berat is Albania’s museum city: the Ottoman quarters of Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the river, white windows stacked up the hillsides, with a still-inhabited castle above holding Byzantine churches within its walls. This walk climbs from the main square through Mangalem to the Castle — including the Onufri Museum with its famous red icons — then drops to the Gorica Bridge for the city’s most famous view. Wear good shoes: the cobbles are beautiful but slippery.
