Gjipe Beach

Tucked at the mouth of a dramatic canyon on the Albanian Riviera, between Dhërmi and Himarë, Gjipe is one of those rare spots that still feels properly wild.

You can’t drive all the way to the sand. Park at the designated area near Ilias (around 400–500 lek / €4–5, cash only) and follow the rocky, unshaded trail down for 20–30 minutes. It’s a bit of a hike, but the moment the turquoise water and towering cliffs come into view, you forget the effort. If you’d rather skip the walk, boats and kayaks run from Himarë or Dhërmi.

The beach itself is rugged and secluded — crystal-clear Ionian water, high cliffs on both sides, and a few leftover Cold War bunkers scattered around. Facilities are minimal: a couple of small shacks sell drinks and basic snacks (cash only, lek or euro), and you can rent a sunbed and umbrella for about €10–15. Bring your own towel.

Most people come to swim, lie in the sun, or wander into the canyon on foot. There are also some good rock-climbing spots if you’re into that.

It’s not the easiest beach to reach, and that’s exactly why it’s still so special.
