Parku Arkeologjik i Antigonesë

National Archaeological Park Antigonea Archaeological Park

Antigonea is the ancient city on the hill by the village of Saraqinisht, in the Lunxhëri area, about 14 km east of Gjirokastër, looking over the Drino valley. Pyrrhus of Epirus founded it in 295 BC and named it after his first wife, Antigone. In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC it became the main town of the valley, fortified by walls about 4 km long. The Romans burned it and it was never rebuilt. Today you can see the walls, the main street with its houses, the portico columns, an ancient weighing stone and an early church with a mosaic floor. It is about a 20-minute drive from Gjirokastër; allow 2 to 3 hours to walk around the park.
