Mother Teresa Square

Shesh Sheshi Nënë Tereza

"Mother Teresa" Square is one of the most iconic and monumental public spaces in Tirana. Designed in the late 1930s by Italian architect Gherardo Bosio, the square stands as a prime example of Rationalist architecture in the Balkans. Positioned at the southern end of the "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard, it serves as the vibrant epicenter of the Albanian capital's academic and cultural life.

The square is framed by some of the country’s most prestigious cultural and educational institutions, including the Central Corpus of the University of Tirana, the Polytechnic University, the University of Arts, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Palace of Congresses. Beyond its institutional weight, the square is a lively gathering hub for youth and a natural open-air venue for massive concerts, festivals, sports events, and historic milestones—such as the Papal mass in 2014.

Currently, the square is undergoing a futuristic transformation. An ambitious modernization project is turning the entire area into a fully pedestrianized zone, redirecting vehicle traffic through a state-of-the-art underground tunnel. This redevelopment also features a new subterranean museum and a dedicated chapel honoring Mother Teresa, elevating the square into a world-class destination that beautifully bridges Tirana's rich heritage with its sustainable future.
