Mengël Castle

Kalaja e Menglit

Castle

Mengël Castle stands on a hill overlooking the Shkumbin Valley, in the Labinot-Fushë administrative unit of Elbasan. This Byzantine fortification served to monitor and protect the Via Egnatia, which passed below the hill. Its polygonal enclosure was reinforced by eight towers. Today, traces of the surrounding walls and foundations remain, bearing witness to the castle’s former defensive role. Listed as a Category I cultural monument, the site combines archaeological heritage with views of the valley and the surrounding hills.
