Ancient Phoinike was the capital of the Chaonian tribe and one of the most important cities of ancient Epirus. Founded around the 4th century BC, the hilltop city preserves impressive fortification walls, an ancient theatre, an acropolis, basilicas, mosaics and other remains spanning the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
